The Union Government has now made it mandatory to link your Aadhar Card with your PAN Card. Moreover, it is now mandatory to link Aadhaar with Pan Card for filing your Income Tax return (ITR). Linking your Aadhar Card to your PAN Card can be done in a few simple steps. In this article, I will explain how to link your Aadhaar card with PAN Card.
As per the recent Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) press release, the deadline for linking Aadhaar Card to PAN card has been extended to September 30, 2019. Also from April 1, 2019, it is mandatory to quote your Aadhaar No while filing ITR unless specifically exempted.

If you are already a registered user at the Income tax e-filing website
If you have already filed your income tax online, chances are that your Aadhaar carb is already linked with your PAN Card. You can do an easy check also.
Log in to the income tax e-filing website by using your credentials (PAN Card and password). Once you are logged in, go to the Profile Setting Tab and select the last option Link Aadhaar. If it is already linked, you will get a message on the screen “Your PAN is linked with Aadhaar Number xxxx xxxx xxxx xxxx”.
In case it is not linked, a page will open where you will be required to fill in the details such as name, Date of Birth and gender as per your PAN records. Next, you will have to enter the Aadhaar Number. Click on submit button once you are sure that all the details are correct. Once submitted, you will get a success message displayed on your screen.
For non registered users:
Step 1: Visit the income tax e-filing website to link your PAN and Aadhaar.
Step 2: Fill in all the relevant details. Enter your PAN Card Number, your Aadhaar Number and your name as per Aadhaar Number.
In case, only your Date of birth is mentioned in the Aadhar Card, then you need to tick the box.
Next enter the Captcha image for verification and then click on the “Link Aadhaar” button.
A pop-up message will appear that you have successfully linked your Aadhaar Card with PAN Card.
Type the message in the following format:
UIDPAN<12 Digit Aadhaar> <10 Digit PAN>
Send the message to either 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number.
Things to keep in mind
Please remember that linking of PAN Card and Aadhar Card is only successful when all your details in both the documents match. If you are trying to link the two documents online, you will get an OTP even if there are difference in the spelling of your name , but the date of birth and gender matches. But, in such case as errors of spelling mistakes in your name, then your Aadhaar card and PAN card will not be linked.
If there are errors, you can get them corrected in the following ways:
To get your details corrected in PAN Card, go to the NSDL website. Fill up the relevant details and submit your signed digital documents for correction of the details. Once your details are corrected and you get confirmation mail by NSDL, link your PAN Card with Aadhar.
In case, there are changes to be made in the Aadhaar Card, you have to visit any Aadhaar Update / enrolment centre near you. These days, only address can be updated online and if you have your mobile number registered.
Importance of Linking PAN Card with Aadhar Card
Linking the two documents is qite important because of the following reasons:
Government has made it mandatory to link all PAN Card with Aadhaar.
Your income tax return will not be processed if your Aadhaar card is not linked with PAN Card.
If you have to carry out a banking transaction above INR 50,000, you have to get your PAN and Aadhaar linked.
