Filing Income tax has often been a hitch for the layman. With the advent of the income tax department’s e-filing portal and online income tax filing, the process of income tax filing has become relatively easier. Even though, most of us keep it for the last moment, even beyond July 31, the due date for filing Income Tax Return (ITR).  But fining the ITR online is not such a dreaded task and can be done with you having a bit knowledge about your income and a little patience. In this blog, I have tried to cover how to fill the Income Tax form, ITR1 or ITR4, online by entering the relevant details and also submit it online.

What is Income Tax return and e-filing?

An Income Tax Return (ITR) in simple terms is the tax form(s) or statement used to file income tax with the IT Department. As per Section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, individuals whose total income during the previous financial year exceeds the maximum exemption limit is liable to furnish income tax return within the due date. The process of electronically filing the ITR is known as e-filing.

Even if you fall within the exemption limit, it is a good habit to file your income tax returns. With the process of e-filing becoming hassle free and less tedious, file your ITR online on time with the help of these steps.

How to file Income Tax Return (ITR) online

Income tax efiling can be done online following a few easy steps from the comfort of your home. The Income tax e-filing website provides 2 ways to do so.

  1. Income Tax e-filing by downloading the ITR Java Utility or the ITR Excel Utility for all the 7 forms. You have to download the utility, furnish the details offline and then upload it on the Income Tax website.
  2. Income Tax e-filing can be done completely online without downloading the Utilities in Excel or Java Format for ITR1 and ITR4.

Procedure for e-filing Income Tax Return using ITR Java Utility / Excel Utility

Every year, the IT Department releases an updated income tax software for filing ITR online. It is released in the form of both excel and Java Utility. The software is totally free. Here are the steps that you need to follow:

Income tax e-filing can also be done without downloading the Utilities, by simply furnishing the details online. Personally, this is my preferred mode. Steps to follow in this case:

  1. Log on to the website e-Filing, Income Tax Department
  2. Go to e-File – Income Tax return – Prepare and Submit Online. Note only ITR1 and ITR4 can be filled online. Choose the assessment year for which you are paying tax

Ensure that your DSC is registered with e-filing. If your ITR is uploaded with DSC, the return filing process is deemed to have finished.
  5. On successful submission of ITR, you will be asked to verify your return using any of the options available. After verification, Acknowledgement details will be displayed. An ITR-V will be automatically generated and sent to your e-mail. This acknowledgement will also show up in your account on the e-filing website from where you can download it if required.
  6. You can verify your return either electronically using the Adhaar OTP or Electronic Verification Code method. You can download the ITR V, sign it and send it to CPC, Bengaluru within 120 days from the date of e-filing.
